Promise Land report:

Bill Vickery

The best part of this ultra is the finish. I don’t mean that simply because I finished running but because there is a cold, clear creek to swim in just beyond the finish line. Several people were already soaking in the water when I planted my sore legs in the pool. There are a few times in my life that have been as satisfying; The first night being married, the first time I held my firstborn, and the night I committed myself to Jesus. Sitting in this cool pool and splashing my head was just about the most wonderful thing that has happened to me.

The aide stations were inviting also but nothing compared to running alongside the creeks and waterfalls. I plan on running many more ultras but Dr. Horton will be hard pressed to find a run as beautiful as this one. Many thanks to everyone who helped make it a great race. Also, thanks to Neal as he helped push me along by making himself visible every now and then and gave me advice on keeping hydrated. Also, the gentleman that gave me two sodium tabs after the race took care of my cramps – thanks. I have discovered ultra runners to be some of the most generous people. Like Adam who practically saved my life after Terrapin by having me chug down two glasses of youth elixir. I still don’t know what was in the drink but I went from an immobile, non-verbal lump to Luke Skywalker in twenty minutes. I kept my kidneys and my sanity thanks to Adam asking how I was doing. All those old-timers keep us newbies alive till the next one. Can’t wait till Masochist…
