History The house was built in
1969. The Basses, who were in their 60s at the time,
built this house as their dream house, the place they would live
out the rest of their lives. Shortly after the house was built Mr. Bass
died. Margaret, his wife, had only one child that was still living with
her at the time and that child was about to leave home. For many years
Mrs. Bass lived in this house by herself. Sometime in the late 80s Mrs. Bass moved to a retirement
home and sold the house. A couple from Colorado bought the house and
lived here for a couple of years. Following some personal difficulties
the family moved back to Colorado. After the couple from Colorado
left, the house
was rented for a short time prior to us purchasing the house in 1991. I had a chance to speak to Mrs. Bass on one occasion when she
had a relative drive her past her old house. At that time she was in her
80s and not in very good health. I also had opportunity to speak with
Mrs. Basss granddaughter who was a bank teller at the bank where we
had our accounts. She told me that her family lived with Mrs. Bass for a
short time when they were building a house. I asked her why the house
was built so large for just the two of them and she said there were
several children and numerous grandchildren and the Basses wanted enough
room for everyone. The area where the apartment is, was not originally laid out
as it is now. The basic walls for all the rooms were there but the
kitchen, which was originally designed as another bedroom, was added
some time later. The bathroom was included in the original plans. The
apartment living room was originally designed as storage. We always
assumed the apartment was added later possibly in anticipation of
when Mrs. Bass got older and needed someone to live in and take care of
her. When we moved into the house our kids were very young. The
apartment served us for a number of years by providing us with built in
baby sitters. We would allow young couples to stay in the apartment for
free and they would provide childcare in return. Several years ago we
began renting the apartment because we no longer needed the childcare.
The apartment is not currently rented because we wanted to prepare the
house for sale. The last renter was paying $395 per month. The house sits on a little over one acre of land but in 1993
we purchased another 6.5 acres that adjoins the original 1 acre on two
sides. The 6.5 acres is actually a saleable building lot with deeded
access along Fair Oaks Lane. When we purchased the extra acreage our
goal was to protect our privacy and we never intended on selling it, but
the fact remains it can be sold and built on if someone were to choose. The deck was added in 1993 and the driveway was paved in
1997. The deck has been treated approximately every 2-3 years and is in
great shape. The driveway was resealed in the summer of 2003. When we purchased the house it was in excellent overall
condition. We did install new shingles on the roof. The original ones
lasted 23 years. Im sure the steep pitch of the roof helps in making
the shingles last longer than normal.
The inside of the house did need some cosmetic work. All of the
rooms had the original wallpaper and paint. Since the house really had
very little traffic in it all those years everything was in great
shape, but as might be expected it was somewhat dated. We have replaced
all dated wallpaper and repainted the majority of the inside walls. The kitchen was completely remodeled in the spring of 2000.
Essentially the kitchen was completely gutted and we started from
scratch. There are two electrical outlets in the kitchen that are
original. Other than that, the entire kitchen, including ceiling, floors,
cabinets, counter top, appliances, wiring, and plumbing was replaced at
that time. Construction details As can be seen in the pictures the house has brick and wood siding. The gutters are copper and all flashing on the roof is copper as well. The siding and trim was painted in the Fall of 2003. The house features some interesting construction details. The inside walls are plaster and not drywall. In 1969 drywall was being used extensively but this house was built using plaster. All inside doors are paneled solid wood and the house features extensive solid wood ceiling moldings. The windows have storm windows installed as well. The attic of the house has extensive space because of the steep roof pitch. There is another 1500 2000 square feet of space that could easily be added in the attic. The house has tons and tons of storage. As you view the pictures you will see this. As you view the pictures you will see several deer mounts. This area of Bedford county is great for deer hunting. If you are interested in learning more about the hunting on this property go HERE.
